🧐 About Me

Hi, I’m Mandy!

I started The Budget Bee because I’ve seen how much our relationship with money is shaped long before we ever open a bank account, and how little we actually talk about it.

Because of the success of my blog at work, I decided to keep sharing my experiences here in hopes they help others, too.

I grew up in a household where money was tight. When I was young, my father lost his job, and while my parents did an incredible job shielding us from the worst of it, I still felt the impact. I remember learning early on that money β€” or the lack thereof β€” could change everything.

What we didn’t do was talk about it.

So like a lot of people, I grew up with an underlying fear: What if I didn’t have enough? What if I lost it all?

As I got older, I made a decision β€” I wasn’t going to avoid money. I was going to understand it.

I ended up with a Master’s in Business Administration, a Project Management Professional certification and a 25-year career with the federal government largely focused on resource management. I’m also the owner of Amanda Poffenberger Photography, and the highest rated photographer in Ashburn, Virginia (by Google reviews).

Here’s what I’ve learned along the way:

🐝 Money isn’t just about numbers β€” it’s about behavior, mindset, and the stories we carry with us.

And those stories can either help us…or quietly hold us back.

What You’ll Find Here

You won’t find generic budgeting tips or promises that you’ll become a millionaire overnight.

What you will find are honest stories about the financial decisions that shaped my life β€” some wonderful, some painful β€” and the lessons they taught me.

Sometimes that means celebrating a sweet financial win.

Sometimes it means talking openly about losing a lot of money on a house.

Sometimes it means sharing what retirement was really like after 25 years in federal service.

I’ve come to believe that our biggest financial mistakes often become our best teachers.

My hope is that by sharing mine, you’ll make better decisions in your own life.

Why “The Budget Bee”?

Bees are known for doing small things consistently.

That’s true of money, too.

Most financial success isn’t built on one perfect decision. It’s built on hundreds of ordinary ones, and a willingness to learn from the mistakes along the way.

That’s why the Budget Bee exists.

Sweet wins. Painful lessons. Better financial decisions.

If You’re Here…

Maybe you grew up the way I did, in a family that rarely talked about money.

Maybe you’ve made a financial decision you wish you could take back.

Maybe you’re approaching retirement, navigating a career change, or simply trying to make wiser choices than you did yesterday.

Whatever brought you here, I’m glad you stopped by.

I hope my stories remind you that none of us gets every financial decision rightβ€”but every one of us can learn from the journey.

🐝 Welcome to The Budget Bee. I’m glad you’re here.
